The Fry carpet business was established in 1990, trading from a converted old cinema. Originally mostly remnants were stocked, but as the business grew so did the amount of roll stock, until at least 70 rolls of carpet and 30 rolls of vinyl were regularly stocked. This created the problem of lifting or winding heavy rolls onto wall stands and free standing racks.
The Easilift was first constructed about 15 years ago from an idea developed by Norman Fry to help load rolls onto racks, reduce the risk of injury to the staff employed by his business and to also save time and manpower.
The main factor in the daily use of the machine was the continued health and safety aspect of staff in loading heavy rolls of carpet and particularly vinyl onto the display stands. Rolls, 4 metres wide and 30 metres in length, weighed anything up to 240 kg and put staff at risk of injury and, in today’s climate, the potential for an injury claim and time off work.
