The Swedish company Kährs looks back on a long and rich history: founded in 1857 in Nybro by Johan Kähr as a small woodworking shop, it initially produced simple household items. Under the leadership of his grandson Gustaf Kähr, the company underwent a transformation: from 1919 onwards, it produced doors, furniture, and toys – laying the foundation for what Kährs is best known for today: high-quality wood flooring. With the patent for multi-layer wood construction in 1941, Kährs revolutionized the parquet industry – it was the beginning of modern prefinished parquet. Further milestones followed: in 1958, the first factory-finished floor was produced; in 1965, a springy sports floor construction was patented; and in 1984, Kährs introduced solvent-free lacquer. In 1999, Kährs was one of the first to use a click system – with the groundbreaking, glue-free Woodloc tongue-and-groove system. In 2012, Kährs merged with Karelia-Upofloor to form the Kährs Group, a leading global manufacturer of wood and resilient flooring.

The Beauty of Wood with the Robustness of Vinyl

Kährs is best known for its premium wood floors: multi-layer parquet with low warping tendency, elegant finish, and high dimensional stability. With the Life collection, Kährs has created a real wood floor that combines the beauty of wood with the robustness of vinyl. This floor is extremely durable: it has a matt lacquered surface, is temperature and moisture stable, and can even be installed on underfloor heating.

Stable Plank with a Thickness of Ten Millimeters

The Life Authentic variant, new to the market, features a brushed, ultra-matt surface, warm color tones (for example, spice tones such as cumin, fennel, or cloves), and a stable plank with a thickness of ten millimeters—all with minimal wood consumption.

Awarded the Nordic Swan Ecolabel

In the commercial sector, Kährs relies on its Zero series: an innovative flooring made from Enomer, a material that contains no PVC, plasticizers, chlorine, or heavy metals. The Zero & Green collection, launched in 2022, has been awarded the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. It consists of 40 percent bio-based polymers and up to 50 percent recycled material. As part of its “Zero Waste” program, Kährs now takes back installation waste, which is recycled and converted into new flooring.

A conscious cCombination of Nature, Aesthetics, and sSustainability

In addition to classic wood and resilient flooring, Kährs also offers Luxury Tiles—design tiles that combine the look of wood or stone with high durability. A particularly sustainable highlight is the Aware Collection: vinyl-free planks based on recycled and bio-based materials (e.g., HDF, natural fibers, cork). The floors have a wood look, are low-emission and robust enough for residential and commercial use (use class 33). The designs in this collection are named after national parks around the world, such as Yosemite, Serengeti and Cappadocia – a conscious combination of nature, aesthetics and sustainability.
