Weave with Purpose: Ethical & Sustainable Production
Our process, Weave with Purpose, transforms hand-knotted weaving into a model of sustainability: it empowers artisans (People), uses recycled, renewable, and low-emission materials (Planet), and produces durable, repairable rugs of lasting quality (Product).
The Characteristics
Our rugs are crafted using renewable raw materials, such as wool, hemp, himalayan nettle (allo), silk and many more, sourced from plants or responsibly managed fibers. These materials support sustainability while ensuring durability and long-lasting quality.
We actively use recycled and upcycled materials wherever possible. Leftover silk and wool from previous projects are carefully sorted, cleaned, and re-dyed to create new rugs, minimizing waste and promoting circular production.
Repairability and longevity are central to our process. Hand-knotted craftsmanship allows for straightforward repairs, while high-quality natural fibers ensure rugs remain durable and visually appealing for years.
Our products can also be refurbished or reused. We encourage people to return unused fibres, which is repurposed through our social enterprise NGO, Hoste Hainse. Additionally, worn-out carpets can be transformed into smaller mats or other functional items, extending the product lifecycle.
For cleaning and maintenance, all rugs are designed to be hand-washed using energy-efficient, low-impact methods. Additionally, we provide free cleaning services for clients who purchase our rugs, ensuring proper care while maintaining sustainable practices.
By combining renewable and recycled materials, repairable design, reusability, and sustainable cleaning, our rugs embody a holistic approach to eco-friendly production. Each piece demonstrates that traditional craftsmanship can coexist with environmental responsibility, creating products that are both functional and sustainable.
We prioritize both sustainability and the health of our artisans. Through our GoodWeave certification, we ensure health-related standards are met, including careful selection of graph/blueprint colors that weavers follow for hours, designed to reduce eye strain and protect long-term vision. We also conduct annual health checks for all weavers. Membership in the United Nations Global Compact reinforces our commitment to responsible practices.
Most of our production is handcrafted, preserving traditional techniques while being energy-efficient. For the few machines we use, we ensure they are low-emission and eco-friendly, reflecting our commitment to minimizing carbon output. Our processes also emphasize low-pollutant and pollutant-free methods, using AZO-free, natural dyes and avoiding harmful chemicals, protecting both the environment and the people involved in production.
By combining health-conscious practices, energy-efficient handcrafting, intentional use of safe machinery, and non-toxic AZO-free dyes, our production process demonstrates how traditional hand-knotted craftsmanship can prioritize human and environmental health while maintaining high-quality, sustainable products.
Founded by Sulochana Shrestha-Shah, the visionary behind GoodWeave Nepal, Formation Carpets carries forward her legacy of ethical and sustainable production. Guided by her principles, we lead by example, setting benchmarks in responsible craftsmanship while empowering artisans and communities.
Social responsibility is central to our production, ensuring every rug is crafted ethically and sustainably. All our rugs are GoodWeave certified, guaranteeing the exclusion of child and forced labour. Regular GoodWeave audits maintain strict compliance and transparency, and the labels allow clients to verify these ethical practices themselves.
We maintain comprehensive due diligence across our supply chain. Locally sourced materials such as hemp and himalayan nettle (allo), as well as imported wool and silk, are procured only from partners who follow fair labour practices and maintain safe working conditions. Within our production units, artisans receive fair wages, work in well-equipped environments, and benefit from proper breaks, ensuring their wellbeing, safety, and dignity at every step.
Our processes exemplify social responsibility through certified ethical labour, rigorous supply chain oversight, and initiatives that empower artisans. Each rug reflects traditional craftsmanship and high-quality design, alongside a commitment to fairness, accountability, and community welfare, demonstrating that ethical production and exceptional design can coexist seamlessly.
Our production prioritizes environmental responsibility through hand-crafted, energy-efficient, and low-emission processes. We primarily use natural dyes instead of synthetic ones, ensuring safer conditions for artisans and minimal chemical impact on the environment. While most of our production is handmade, the few machines we use are carefully selected for low carbon emissions, reflecting our commitment to minimizing our environmental footprint.
The selective few materials which are locally sourced such as hemp and himalayan nettle (allo) supports regional farmers and reduces transportation-related CO2 emissions. Imported wool and silk are repurposed wherever possible, and leftover yarn and scraps are brought back to be used in cushions and smaller products, creating a circular system that reduces waste.
Through United Nations Global Compact Nepal, we receive supply chain training, enabling us to track the origin of our raw materials and understand their carbon impact. Hand-knotted weaving itself is energy-efficient, and careful sourcing and traceability of materials ensure transparency and accountability throughout our production chain. Regular health checkups for artisans complement our non-toxic processes, ensuring both environmental and human safety.
Building on our membership in United Nations Global Compact Nepal and GoodWeave, our practices reflect a proactive and holistic approach to sustainable production. By combining renewable and repurposed materials, low-impact and energy-efficient processes, transparent supply chains, and circular recycling systems, we create durable, long-lasting rugs that are both environmentally and socially responsible.
