KEIM. Sustainability in color. Mineral-based exterior and interior paints—beautiful, durable, ecological, and healthy for living spaces.
Since 1878, KEIM has stood for recyclable, healthy and durable silicate paints. With C2C-certified products, low-CO₂ production, natural raw materials and socially responsible practices, we are shaping sustainable construction – healthy, safe and generation-friendly.
The Characteristics
The guiding principle of company founder A.W. Keim—acting responsibly for future generations—has shaped our company for over 145 years. Our mineral products are based on natural raw materials and consistently follow the shift from a linear to a circular economy. They have an excellent ecological profile throughout their entire life cycle: resource-saving production, decades of service life, easy renovation, and a natural end of life through return to the biological cycle. Mineral paints “wear out” during use and are returned to the environment through erosion and abrasion – without pollutants and without harming the biosphere. Due to their mineral structure, they have particularly high diffusion capacity, maximum weather resistance, and can even break down air pollutants. In this way, they protect both the building fabric and the environment. Our products are synonymous with outstanding durability: many historic facades have been coated with KEIM paints for over 100 years, and we offer a 20-year color guarantee for our classic products. Their high repairability and recoatability ensure that surfaces can be repaired countless times without compromising their structural properties. This significantly reduces renovation cycles, material requirements, and energy consumption. With 80 Cradle to Cradle Certified® products (Silver, Material Health Gold), we set standards for recyclable coating systems. Our Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and sustainability data sheets support planners with DGNB, LEED, or other sustainable certifications. Conclusion: KEIM demonstrates how mineral products make a measurable contribution to the circular economy, climate protection, and permanently healthy buildings through natural raw materials, extreme durability, reparability, and biological recyclability.
KEIMFARBEN has comprehensive sustainability and health certifications. 80 products (>85% of paint sales) from the areas of facade and interior paints as well as wood and concrete systems have achieved C2C Silver certification and the C2C Certified Material Health Certificate Gold. KEIM developed the world's first natureplus-certified interior and facade paints that meet strict criteria for emissions, ingredients, and socially responsible production. KEIM silicate paints are based on natural raw materials, are free of solvents, plasticizers, preservatives, and PFAS, and do not contain any CMR substances. The low emissions result from both the silicate base and consistent raw material evaluation and risk assessment. Regular emissions, material, and water analyses ensure transparency regarding our environmental impact. KEIM products also meet the requirements of the Quality Seal for Sustainable Buildings (QNG). KEIM products also meet the requirements of the Quality Seal for Sustainable Buildings (QNG). KEIM works in accordance with ISO 14001 and ISO 9001, supplemented by energy-efficient processes, the use of green electricity, and regular energy audits. 85% of plastic buckets are made from PCR material, which significantly reduces Scope 3 emissions from packaging. The development of innovative, revolutionary products set new standards: KEIM Purkristalat, the first practical silicate paint, set new standards in terms of durability, color intensity, and light reflection. KEIM Biosil, the world's first interior paint certified as healthy for living, natureplus and suitable for allergy sufferers. Or KEIM Twinstar, the world's first biocide-free 2-in-1 facade paint – it saves work steps, does not use biocides, protects biodiversity (compared to paints with film protection) and increases resource efficiency through its durability. Certified processes, safe ingredients, low-emission products, and a proven recyclable product range – KEIM makes a comprehensive, measurable contribution to health, climate protection, and sustainable construction.
Social responsibility has been a central component of our business activities since 1878. The motto of our founder, A.W. Keim, still applies today: “We want to live, work, strive, fight, and care for our fellow human beings, working for future generations so that the world becomes a better place.” We consistently reject child labor and forced labor. Clear supplier requirements, regular assessments, and compliance with international standards ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, transparency, and integrity throughout the supply chain. Our products reflect this: KEIM mineral paints are free of harmful substances, non-flammable, low-emission, and harmless to health. This is confirmed by independent tests/certificates such as natureplus and Cradle to Cradle Certified®. Protecting the health of workers and residents makes an important contribution to society. The C2C certification also explicitly includes the category of social responsibility; for this purpose, a self-audit of the UN Global Compact is carried out every two years, which is reviewed by external auditors. Progress must be transparently demonstrated every two years. KEIM supports projects for children and young people, educational and cultural initiatives, and disaster relief measures worldwide. Our healthy living products also contribute to health and well-being by protecting allergy sufferers, minimizing mold risks, and enabling a balanced indoor climate. As an active member of the VdL, we support the principles of the UN Global Compact and contribute to the implementation of key Sustainable Development Goals, e.g., health (SDG 3), decent work (SDG 8), sustainable production (SDG 12), and climate action (SDG 13). Conclusion: KEIM combines social responsibility, safe materials, transparent supply chains, and independent certifications with products that protect people, promote health, and create added value for society.
KEIM pursues comprehensive measures to reduce CO₂ emissions in production. 100% of the electricity requirements at all production sites worldwide are covered by certified green electricity. By the end of 2025, over 30% of this will come from the company's own photovoltaic generation. Additional savings are achieved through heat pumps, LED conversion, electromobility, and district heating from biomass. Efficiency measures in heating systems have reduced natural gas consumption by approximately 20% in 2024. For CO₂-intensive components, KEIM relies on alternatives such as CO₂-reduced plasters and environmentally friendly production processes. KEIM is consciously transitioning from a linear to a circular approach and is aligning itself with the EU Green Deal. Regional supply chains play an important role: KEIM maintains long-term partnerships with suppliers from the DACH region to reduce transport emissions. Life cycle assessments and environmental data are transparently available for many products – since 2013, EPDs have been available for all major product groups, disclosing life cycle assessment values, environmental impacts, and resource use. Recycling and circular systems are firmly established: defective batches are returned in full to the production process, waste is minimized, and PCR buckets (85%) significantly reduce plastic and CO₂ footprints. Mineral paints themselves are recyclable: they “consume” themselves and return to the biological cycle through natural erosion. The manufacturing processes are non-toxic and low-emission. KEIM paints are PFAS-free, solvent-free, plasticizer-free, and preservative-free. Conclusion: KEIM combines low-CO₂ production, renewable energies, regional supply chains, transparent environmental indicators, recyclable products, and non-toxic, emission-free manufacturing processes. In this way, we make a demonstrably effective contribution to climate-compatible construction and the circular economy.
