Go4cork blend with Nike Grind | Amorim Cork Composites
The Go4cork blend with Nike Grind underlay is a product supplied by Amorim Cork Composites - Corticeira Amorim's Composite Cork business unit - that has been specially developed for the flooring industry. Cork is an amazingly versatile material and, when combined with Nike Grind EVA foam, delivers great benefits in all flooring installations. This huge range of attributes fulfills the needs of the final floor, whatever they may be. The new solution is based on a formulation that aims to provide high performance to the underlay, due to the unique characteristics of cork as a raw material: durability, comfort, impermeability, thermal, acoustic, and anti-vibration insulation.
According to a recent analytic study conducted by EY, the Go4cork Blend with Nike Grind has a negative carbon balance of -5.6kg CO2 eq/m2. The associated carbon sequestration promoted by the cork oak forest exceeds the CO2 emissions from production. The methodology of EY's studies was based on the ISO 14040/44 standards, complemented by the guidelines of the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD). Production data was provided by Amorim Cork Composites, while data on the general production processes associated with the production of raw materials, energy, transport, and waste management was obtained from the ecoinvent 3.5 database.
The Characteristics
Through the development of a sustainable solution, designed to be circular, Go4Cork aims to create a positive environmental impact by merging cork with remnants from other industries. This strategic combination of materials, especially utilizing leftovers of Nike Grind EVA foam, is intended to foster a product that contributes positively to the environment and reduces the carbon footprint. Circular Economy: More than 50 years of circular economy principles. Striving continuously to reach zero waste and to optimize the added value of all raw materials:
The Go4cork blend with Nike Grind underlay complies with the stringent standards set by the European market concerning indoor air quality, as outlined in the AgBB Protocol. Adhering to these rigorous guidelines ensures that our offering meets the highest benchmarks for air quality, affirming its suitability for indoor environments. This adherence underscores our commitment to providing products that prioritize health and environmental well-being.
Additionally, a cork underlay is synonymous with comfort and well-being since it can offer cushioning and support for floors, contributing to more comfortable walking surfaces. As underlay, agglomerated cork is perceived from the first interaction with the floor, and it is arousing positive feelings associated with cork. However, cork is not only a marketing tool; in fact, cork brings technical benefits, and when used as a pre-attached underlayment, it is an excellent option to improve impact noise reduction and provide differentiation through a natural material.
Photovoltaic project: Corticeira Amorim is determined to increase the consumption of energy derived from renewable sources, both through selecting energy suppliers based on the proportion of renewable energy in their mix and through direct investment in photovoltaic projects. With an investment exceeding 11 million euros during the period of 2021-2024, 22,000 KWp will be installed using over 40,000 solar panels placed on the roofs of the factories. The objective is to have the primary industrial units sourcing a portion of their energy consumption from photovoltaic energy. The produced energy will be for self-consumption, representing 20% of the Group's electricity consumption and averting the emission of approximately 14.6 thousand tCO2eq per year. In 2022, 12,672 GJ of energy were generated from these panels, which, combined with the electricity produced through cogeneration (4,019 GJ), accounts for 3.2% of the total electricity consumed (522,886 GJ). This project notably contributed to reducing energy costs and enhancing the sustainability of Amorim Cork Composites' production process while supporting environmental preservation. Additionally, noteworthy are the certifications attained for quality, environmental, and energy systems. Furthermore, in 2022, Corticeira Amorim achieved:
