Amorim NRT®33 preattached underlay | Amorim Cork Composites
The Amorim NRT®33 pre-attached underlay, supplied by Amorim Cork Composites - Corticeira Amorim's Composite Cork business unit - has been specially developed for the flooring industry, particularly for laminates and LVT. Our materials are manufactured with Amorim NRT - Noise Reduction Technology, which, in addition to greater noise reduction, preserves all its characteristics over time.
Amorim NRT®33 is a lower-density product composed of cork and a paper carrier, improving tensile strength, the client's production process efficiency, and the final floor value proposition. This sustainable and natural solution will improve the homogeneity of the adhesion of the pre-attached underlayment to other layers of the floor. As a pre-attached underlayment, agglomerated cork is perceived from the first interaction with the floor, arousing positive feelings associated with cork.
The use of an NRT pre-attached underlayment acts like the traditional underlay, preventing the transmission of mechanical energy through the slab. The perfect energy attenuation is provided by the engineered combination of different cork granules, targeted to be underneath the MDF, plywood, staves, WPCs, or polymer, or polymer-composite substrate. A pre-attached underlayment cork layer on the reverse dulls impact noise and improves the laying characteristics of the flooring, due to the unique characteristics of cork as a raw material: durability, comfort, impermeability, thermal, acoustic, and anti-vibration insulation.
Furthermore, Amorim Cork Composites focuses on innovation in terms of product and new technologies and has a reactive innovation capacity, adapting to market demands, as well as a proactive innovation capacity concerning product development.
The Characteristics
With a commitment to sustainability ingrained in its DNA, this underlay is crafted using over 80% natural materials, minimizing its environmental footprint while maximizing its impact. Moreover, this product uses a water-based resin that is less harmful to both health and the environment, further enhancing the indoor air quality of cork and seamlessly aligning with its properties. By employing a natural material such as cork, we're also committed to selecting additional components that uphold environmentally friendly practices as closely as possible.
In fact, the focus on green products while maintaining a proactive role in advancing the already extensive field of cork applications, supported by the inherent characteristics of the material, allows 100% of cork valorization. Our products are developed respecting nature and considering nature as the starting point for a sustainable future. Respect for nature is the essence of our existence. By promoting cyclical extraction of cork, without damaging the cork oak trees, Corticeira Amorim's activity ensures the viability of the cork oak forest, which is a natural and renewable resource, offering numerous environmental, economic, and social benefits. Studies indicate that for each ton of cork produced, the cork oak forest can sequester up to 73 tons of CO2, thus helping to reduce the Global Warming Potential. But Nature is just the starting point. Our mission involves trying to go further and applying the best sustainability principles.
Cork, renowned for being a natural, renewable, and biodegradable material, stands out as an environmentally conscious choice, especially in its application for underlays. Its use in this capacity not only champions sustainability but also champions healthier living environments. Additionally, by selecting a water-based resin that is less harmful to both health and the environment, we're not compromising the quality of our product's natural properties.
One notable advantage lies in cork's hypoallergenic properties. Unlike synthetic or chemically treated materials, cork exhibits characteristics that are gentle on individuals sensitive to common allergens. By naturally resisting the development of allergens such as dust, mold, and mites, cork underlays create a more accommodating indoor space for those prone to allergies. This innate property not only promotes a healthier indoor environment but also offers peace of mind to individuals seeking a more allergen-resistant living space.
Amorim NRT®33 complies with the stringent standards set by the European market concerning indoor air quality, as outlined in the AgBB Protocol. Adhering to these rigorous guidelines ensures that our offering meets the highest benchmarks for air quality, affirming its suitability for indoor environments. This adherence underscores our commitment to providing products that prioritize health and environmental well-being.
Additionally, a cork pre-attached underlay is synonymous with comfort and well-being since it can offer cushioning and support for floors, contributing to more comfortable walking surfaces. As a pre-attached underlay, agglomerated cork is perceived from the first interaction with the floor, arousing positive feelings associated with cork. However, cork is not only a marketing tool; in fact, cork brings technical benefits and, when used as a pre-attached underlayment, it is an excellent option to improve impact noise reduction and provide differentiation through a natural material.
Photovoltaic project: Corticeira Amorim is determined to increase the consumption of energy derived from renewable sources, both through selecting energy suppliers based on the proportion of renewable energy in their mix and through direct investment in photovoltaic projects.
With an investment exceeding 11 million euros during the period of 2021-2024, 22,000 KWp will be installed using over 40,000 solar panels placed on the roofs of the factories. The objective is to have the primary industrial units sourcing a portion of their energy consumption from photovoltaic energy. The produced energy will be for self-consumption, representing 20% of the Group's electricity consumption and averting the emission of approximately 14.6 thousand tCO2eq per year.
In 2022, 12,672 GJ of energy were generated from these panels, which, combined with the electricity produced through cogeneration (4,019 GJ), accounts for 3.2% of the total electricity consumed (522,886 GJ). This project notably contributed to reducing energy costs and enhancing the sustainability of Amorim Cork Composites' production process while supporting environmental preservation. Additionally, noteworthy are the certifications attained for quality, environmental, and energy systems.
Corticeira Amorim promotes its fundamental role in building resilient Communities, with the fundamental objective of being an agent of change and value creation. It generates economic value for the Communities where it is present at an international, national, regional, and local level, directly, indirectly, and induced, namely as a major employer, investor, taxpayer, and local business partner.
We regularly monitor the actions outlined in our sustainability plan, which encompasses the following objectives for 2030:
