Starting at 5:30 p.m. on January 21, 2026, KIT professor Dirk E. Hebel will give a guest lecture on collecting, harvesting, and cultivating future building materials. How should we respond to the increasing scarcity of materials in construction? Hebel calls for a paradigm shift.
What the Karlsruhe professor of sustainable construction means by this will become clear during the subsequent panel discussion at the latest. The discussion will be moderated by Eva Maria Herrmann, the new editor-in-chief of Deutsches Architekt:innenblatt.
Since 2007, the Lavesstiftung has been promoting a constructive exchange in the field of architecture in the spirit of its guiding principle "Architecture is Culture". Under the patronage of the Lower Saxony's former Minister of Economic Affairs, Walter Hirche, the foundation links the Hanoverian tradition to the future of building in Lower Saxony with reference to the royal court architect Laves.
The Lavesstiftung understands itself as an institution with a social mission, believing: “Construction affects us all. Quality requires not only a close partnership between client and architect, there must also be a public debate about construction."
With its renowned series of discussions entitled "Architecture in Dialogue", the Lavesstiftung has been successfully meeting this challenge for years. In 2026, Deutsche Messe AG is supporting the Lavesstiftung as a partner for the sixth time.
In recent years, DOMOTEX, Home of Flooring & Interior Finishing, has teamed up with the Lavesstiftung to inspire the international audience of the fair with fascinating presentations from architects. These include Professor Eckhard Gerber (Gerber Architekten, Dortmund), Martin Murphy (Störmer Murphy Partners, Hamburg), Titus Bernhard (Titus Bernhard Architekten, Augsburg) Much Untertrifaller (Dietrich Untertrifaller, Untertrifaller Architekten ZT GmbH) and Cord-Hinrich Grote (ATELIER BRÜCKNER).
Dirk E. Hebel is Professor of Sustainable Building and Vice Dean for Strategic Development at the KIT Faculty of Architecture at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. His research focuses on recyclable and emission-free design and construction with a focus on novel and single-material materials. He is the editor of numerous book publications, most recently “Sortenrein Bauen” (DETAIL Verlag, 2023, with Ludwig Wappner et.al.) and “Vom Bauen mit natürlichen Materialien” (Fraunhofer IRB Verlag, 2024, with Sandra Böhm and Elena Boerman). As faculty representative together with Professor Andreas Wagner, he won the international university competition Solar Decathlon Europe 2021-22 as part of the RoofKIT team (Regina Gebauer and Nicolas Carbonare).
He is a member of the BDA (Association of German Architects) and works as a practicing architect in the firm “2hs Architekten und Ingenieur,” which he co-founded, with a focus on resource-efficient construction and the use of materials in line with circular economy principles. Together with Werner Sobek and Felix Heisel, he completed the highly acclaimed “Urban Mining and Recycling” construction project in EMPA's NEST project in Dübendorf near Zurich, and with Felix Heisel, Karsten Schlesier, Lisa Krämer, and Simon Sommer, he completed the “Mehr.WERT.Pavillon” for the Baden-Württemberg State Environment Agency at the Federal Horticultural Show in Heilbronn.
