The German Design Award is one of the most recognized design awards worldwide. Notorious for its rigorous selection process, in which a high-caliber jury of experts from various disciplines evaluates the submissions, this award has become an established indicator of current trends and forward-looking developments in the field of design. The German Design Award honors innovative products and projects, their manufacturers and designers who are pioneers in the German and international design landscape. Given these criteria, it seems almost inevitable that Weitzer Parkett from Weiz, Austria, has now also been awarded this prestigious prize. With its award-winning Reparkett product, Weitzer has once again proven that not everything has to be reinvented to be considered top design. The processing of old parquet strips creates a look that is as unique as the sometimes 200-year-old history of the wood flooring.
What exactly is ReParkett?
As the name suggests, it is about reusing valuable old parquet flooring. Countless stories have unfolded on old parquet flooring from the Wilhelminian era. Numerous generations have played, danced, and lived on it. And that's not the only reason why it's such a shame to simply throw away such a valuable treasure.
Urban Mining
The neologism “urban mining” originally referred to the recovery of building materials from excavations in urban areas. But Weitzer Parkett has, by its own admission, given the term a new meaning. Old parquet flooring is so valuable that it is worth saving it from disposal and – once reconditioned – returning it to the value cycle. In short: the parquet is collected, carefully recycled, and delivered again. After the old parquet strips have been recycled, the customer receives a look that is as unique as its 200-year-old past. A perfect floor so that future generations can continue to write history on it.
