Toofan - LUB-16 | Jaipur Rugs
This rug is part of the innovative Freedom Manchaha project, a sustainable initiative transforming the lives of long-term prisoners in Rajasthan's jails. This program offers inmates the opportunity to design their own rugs, fostering healing, purpose, and a new sense of identity. It effectively addresses the cycle of poverty and illiteracy that often leads to crime, allowing prisoners to express latent creativity and evolve into artists.
Our approach facilitates collaboration among inmates, positively transforming the prison environment and giving rise to a new visual language that reflects their individual and collective experiences. Starting with just 2-3 inmates, the project has expanded to impact over 500 inmates across 5 jails in Rajasthan.
Each rug in the collection is not only a design masterpiece but also a testament to the transformative power of art. Every square meter of the rug contains 222,184 individual knots, made from hand-spun leftover yarn that cannot be reused in standard carpet production.
One notable creation is “Toofan” by Bharat from Jaipur Jail. Initially working with shades of grey, his rug began to embody a tornado, reflecting his inner conflict. As the rug progressed, it evolved to include motifs from his childhood, leading to a realization and calming of his inner turmoil. He started envisioning a future of freedom, symbolized by colorful kites without strings. This transition from chaos to hope and liberation is a powerful narrative woven into the fabric of the rug.
By expanding the use of rugs as unique wall art and using hand-spun wool to create various textures, this initiative promotes rehabilitation, inclusivity, and waste reduction. It contributes to a more just and sustainable society, where individuals are empowered and the environment is respected.
