Featured concepts to be selected by expert panel

In the "Flooring Spaces" zone, companies from the floor coverings industry will be able to shine as pioneers and trendsetters by staging highly creative product showcases. The number of Flooring Spaces is limited – so an external jury of experts will decide which companies can present their ideas and designs on the theme of CREATE'N'CONNECT.

Entries of great breadth and depth

The final say on who will star at the special display went to Peter Ippolito as the jury's chair. For him, the new CREATE'N'CONNECT keynote theme elegantly states the flipside of the 2018 theme, which was dedicated to the individualization megatrend in which everyone creates their own unique universe. "The flip-side is that, in today's society, people are seeking community and cohesion. They are looking for values and, indeed, for boundaries in a world that has become so boundless," he says, noting that the connectivity theme – the question of what connects us with what values – can be very exciting when translated into three-dimensional space. "From an interior design standpoint, the floor is always a medium that can create, connect and expand space. That is our fundamental assumption."

Susanne Schmidhuber, who is the jury's spokesperson, emphasizes the breadth and pleasing depth of the proposals submitted this year. "The submitter numbers are roughly the same, but the quality – already high last year – was even better this year. Content-wise, this year's projects deal with their subject matter in greater depth." This is particularly true of the projects submitted by university groups, the jurors noted.

About the members of the jury

Peter Ippolito

Peter Ippolito co-founded the Ippolito Fleitz Group design studio in 2002. Based in Stuttgart and serving clients worldwide, the firm designs buildings, interiors, landscapes, products and communication strategies.

Many of the studio's designs have won prestigious awards, including multiple IF gold, red dot, and ADC awards. In 2015, Ippolito and Fleitz became the first German interior designers to be inducted into Interior Design magazine's prestigious Hall of Fame. In addition to his creative work, Peter Ippolito is in keen demand as a speaker and as a member of competition juries. He is a member of the German Designers Club (Deutscher Designer Club).

Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Hundt studied mechanical engineering at the TU Munich and architecture at the University Stuttgart. In 1998, he founded with his partner Ingo Zirngibl the creative agency jangled nerves. Parallel to his responsibilities as managing partner he teaches since 1999. In 2004, he was appointed to the professorship for media + space at the Faculty of Architecture and Design of the Stuttgart University of Applied Science.

jangled nerves is an interdisciplinary team, specialized in live communication combining the physical and the digital world. The agency unites the expertise and services for strategic consulting, conception and design with planning for museums and exhibition design and production for films, media and interaction. Media and space are inspirational elements that influence each other in the design process, and they need to be viewed and developed as a whole. The objective: creating collective experiences for lasting impressions and enriching brands with a specific factor, which has not been discovered yet. The international and award-winning projects include museums, exhibitions, live experiences, events, showrooms and fairs, with customers from the fields of culture, science and industry.

Susanne Schmidhuber and Professor Klaus Schmidhuber founded Schmidhuber+Partner – now called SCHMIDHUBER – in 1984. The firm has been developing creative brand concepts for over 30 years. Based in Munich, SCHMIDHUBER employs over 70 experts from the fields of architecture, design and communication. Together, they develop uniquely powerful design concepts and engaging, immersive brand stories.

Over the years, the firm has won more than 260 international design prizes and is one of the world's leading specialists in the use of architecture to build brands. Susanne Schmidhuber holds a degree in interior architecture. In addition to her main duties for her firm, she is a regular on the lecture circuit and a valued contributor to many professional and expert juries.

Dr. Susanne Kaufmann

Since April 2015, Ms. Kaufmann has worked as a research associate at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart art museum where she heads a research project on the Marcel Duchamp Collection. Before that, she was an assistant lecturer at the University of Stuttgart's Institute of Art History.

Susanne Kaufmann studied art history, history and literature in Munich and London. She wrote her PhD thesis on "Invention and Reproduction of Paul Klee's Print Works".
