The Portland Project
Where does inspiration begin? On the road.
Like so many great stories, this one starts with a road trip. When Mannington Design Studio set out to create the Portland Project, they had a simple brief: a new product collection that speaks to experience as much as to pattern, to inspiration as much as to texture and color.
So the designers lit out for Portland, Oregon, a city famous for its active outdoor scene and local personality, mountains, waterfalls, forests and the Pacific. We all know that there is tremendous creative value to unplugging from screens and inboxes, restoring our attention. But how much better, when we can do that in a context where we are struck by our surroundings.
Back in the studio, the team set out to create a product that captured the spirit of the road trip. The result is far more than a literal interpretation of sketches, notes, photos, and stories. 12»x48» carpet planks, with dynamic lines drawn from mountain and zigzagging trails and translated into large and medium scale patterns. Linear movements and layered striations of color. Neutral, coastal-inspired grays and browns, and richly saturated hues create subtle visual explorations.
The Portland Project. Wander and wonder. Make your own path.
