International Stars of the Architecture World get together and compare notes

This year's contractworld.congress again attracted some 2,500 architects, interior designers, planners and design professionals to what is the largest European gathering of its kind.

Inhalt-Linke-Spalte

Experts and decision-makers working in the contract furnishing sector met here to learn about innovative solutions in flooring design – for everything from offices, hotels and restaurants to nurseries, schools and churches.

The congress program read like a Who's Who of the architecture profession. The Lebanese architect Nabil Gholam set the standard on the first day with his lecture "Past tense. Future sense." on the subject of architectural conversions/change of use. Under the title "Exporting architecture" architect Neil M. Denari from Los Angeles posed the provocative question: "What's the problem?" Other topics were "Architectural culture", covering themes such as the social city, gentrification and the competition between cities, as well as "Architecture and climate change".

List of Speakers

Each day of the four-day congress was devoted to a separate theme.

Theme

Description

Change of use
(Saturday, 14-01-2012)

On the first day of the Congress the keynote theme will be the conversion of existing buildings. The discussion will focus on projects in which old, derelict buildings have received a new purpose and a new lease of life, thereby becoming reintegrated into the life of their city neighbourhood. Architects find such projects especially exciting. Their realization demands imaginative concepts which require them to master technical challenges, while meeting ethical and aesthetic criteria.

Architecture as an export
(Sunday, 15-01-2012)

On the second day of the Congress the motto is "Architecture Exported". Architects with successful international operations will offer insights into their strategies and experiences on the global marketplace. How does construction in foreign countries and cultures differ from that in one’s own country? What similarities are there? How do the experiences of other cultures and contexts influence the practice of architecture elsewhere?

The culture of architecture
(Monday, 16-01-2012)

The third day of the Congress is dedicated to the culture of architecture and keynotes such as social developments and gentrification, as well as competition between cities. Urban planning strategies and the creation of a good investment climate are intended to nurture the culture of architecture. Much of the discussion will revolve around how to get the right balance between different challenges – for example, between function and quality of design.

Architecture in the light of climate change
(Tuesday, 17-01-2012)

The fourth day of the Congress addresses climate change and its effects on architecture and urban development. What criteria should climate-friendly building fulfil in future? How will climate considerations impact on design? Decentralized energy supply concepts such as wind parks have, for example, had a big effect on the landscape. There is also a perceivable shift in public awareness, the consequences of which will form the basis for discussion.
